Indeed, one year after releasing the Cobra, Audemars Piguet launched a watch that would go on to not only reshape the brand, but the entire industry: the 5402 Royal Oak. Though the Cobra was also a shaped watch designed by the great Gérald Genta, the flame of the Royal Oak simply burned too brightly. However, as tastemaking moves more and more towards elegant and unusually shaped watches, the Cobra has finally stepped into the spotlight. The design of the Cobra is not only very relevant today, the present lot also features another highly desirable element to modern collectors due to its provenance. This watch belonged to the highly decorated Fouad Beseiso, whose list of accomplishments is more than deserving of a watch of this caliber. A renowned economist, Dr. Beseiso played a pivotal role in founding and serving as the inaugural governor of the Middle Eastern Central Bank. His career also encompassed extensive academic work, having taught at several prestigious Arab universities, where he shaped the minds of future economists and policymakers. In addition to his academic contributions, Dr. Beseiso spent 14 years as the Chief Program Planning Officer at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), where he made significant contributions to the region’s economic development. In recognition of his tireless dedication and notable achievements, he was honored with a special gift: a watch bestowed at the personal request of Sultan Qaboos of Oman. This prestigious honor reflects the high regard in which he was held for his contributions to economic development. The watch’s case back features the distinctive Royal Khanjar insignia, symbolizing its exclusive connection to the Omani Sultanate.
