With smaller case sizes becoming trendy again, this Benrus is definitely on the smaller side for a pilot's chronograph, but no less wearable thanks to its chunky profile, ultra legible luminous black dial and domed acrylic crystal. If that's not enough to convince you, this 35mm of pure goodness packs a punch via its mighty Valjoux 72 movement, for an added touch of precision and dependability. MODEL/REFERENCE: Benrus Sky Chief Chronograph reference G280F. This timepiece dates from circa 1945. DIAL+HANDS: The black dial is superbly preserved, with a complete gilt imprint throughout and very sparce speckles. It also features a tricompax chronograph layout with three recessed subdials with concentric decoration. The Arabic numerals and dots at the hour markers display a mildly aged Radium lume that started to acquire a lovely darker vanilla tone. The original syringe hands are correct and original. They show intact lume inlays and a layer of oxidation due to age. CRYSTAL: The Plexiglas crystal displays some scratches throughout that can be polished off. CASE: The two-body, stainless steel case measures 35mm in diameter and 43mm from lug tip to lug tip. It appears to be unmolested as it retains thick downturned lugs and a strong profile, along with some scratch marks throughout, consistent with its age. CASE BACK: The snap-on case back still retains its original satin finish and a very prominent reference number stamp. The inside is clean, signed and decorated with a perlage motif. CROWN+PUSHERS: The oversized crown is unsigned and very likely original, just like the dual rectangular pushers. The whole ensemble operates perfectly. MOVEMENT: The manually wound Valjoux 72 (VZ-3) is a workhorse two-button chronograph movement with a tricompax display and column wheel. It has been been fully serviced and is in excellent working order. The movement is signed and bears the Swiss import stamp on the balance bridge.
