The watch will be shipped with a Sotheby’s branded calf leather strap. The Tank Americaine was first presented in 1989. Taking its inspiration from the Tank Cintrée, it has a more massive and squared design. It responds to the needs and tastes of a new clientele and is, by the same occasion, the first "waterproof" curved case by Cartier. It was quickly to become a must have of the brand. At the time when most of the Tank watches were time only, the Tank Americaine design was perfectly suited to integrate complications such as the date, subsidiary seconds, moon-phases or chronograph. While many versions of the Tank Americaine have been produced over the years, the CPCP version, such as the present lot, is the most desirable and collectible iteration.
