1970s Certina DS-2 SuperPH 500M “Tektite”

Founded in 1888 as Grana and later rebranded as Certina, the company introduced the DS series in 1959, known for its enhanced shock and water resistance. The DS-2 SuperPH 500M, launched in the 1960s, was one of the best dive watches of the era. These unique dive watches, including the DS-2 SuperPH 500M used in the Tektite I underwater habitat, have a dedicated following. Tektite I was a federal underwater experiment that took place from February 15 to April 15, 1969 in the Lameshur Bay of St. John, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea. In this experiment performed by the U.S. Navy, NASA and the American Department of the Interior in collaboration with the General Electric Company, four aquanauts spent 60 days in an underwater habitat 15 meters below sea level. It was the first scientists-in-the-sea program sponsored nationally. This Certina DS-2 SuperPH 500M is from the series out of which were issued the pieces that were used during the Tektite experiment. It is in immaculate condition overall, with a strong case and a few scratches. The dial and hands are flawless and feature the distinctive Tektite colors (bold orange), and the bezel functions correctly. With its original bracelet, this watch is a standout piece.
