Epic X Skeleton Black: The Ultimate Fusion Of Design And Watchmaking Technique
With the launch of the new Epic X collection in 2016, Jacob & Co. took a new direction, with novel shapes, new materials and a renewed state of mind. The design inspiration comes from the letter X, a symbol of mystery, the unknown and allure, capturing the energy of the brand at that time.
The Epic X is a modern evolution of a skeletonized timepiece. The open-worked timepiece allows the movement to be visible both through the dial and the back of the watch, with as much metal removed as possible without compromising functionality. The goal of the watchmaker crafting an open-worked watch is to achieve the highest level of transparency possible; the challenging combination of visual lightness with structural integrity.
The Epic X Skeleton combines an essential watchmaking feature, the skeleton watch, with Jacob & Co’s radical design approach. The result: the Epic X Skeleton links inside and out, the movement and the 44 mm case. The X shape starts at the lugs, crosses the movement’s vertical bridges and ends at the other pair of lugs. Transparency, structure, innovation: three Jacob & Co. design guidelines united in the Epic X Skeleton.
From creative conception to design inspiration, from the first pencil stroke to hundreds of iterations, a unique piece comes to life. Geometry and freedom, structure and invention, sporty and openworked, the Epic X Skeleton embodies opposites that come together. The case and movement of the Epic X Skeleton are one and the same. The design of the Epic X Skeleton called for a different mindset, where everything is governed by the X, while letting in the light.
The four horns of the Epic X Skeleton are unique. Their shape, inclination and edges are the true signature of the Epic X Skeleton. They extend the exclusive skeleton movement, structured around two vertical bridges and framing a large void. The Epic X Skeleton is governed by design, as is the JCAM45 caliber. Functionally, it is an hour and minute movement. In spirit, its skeleton structure follows the X rule. It is light, technical and entirely focused on its form.
THE SKELETONIZED MOVEMENT AND FINISHING
The JCAM45 caliber has been specially developed for the Epic X Skeleton, offering maximum transparency thanks to its skeletonized shape. All normally solid components are hollowed out. Instead of a main plate, the entire movement is suspended on the two vertical bridges. Every visible component has a dual function: technical and aesthetic. The structure becomes the shape, design and identity of the Epic X Skeleton. The JCAM45 caliber receives surface finishes that serve its skeleton structure. In the absence of a flat surface, the color of the gear and bridge plating becomes essential. The beveling of the components is omnipresent, enhancing the structure and revealing it with glossy and matte edges.
