Edward was an apprentice of Christian Huygens, the great Dutch mathematician and watchmaker, who is credited with the invention of the balance spring, one of the most important scientific discoveries related to the development of the watch. After several years, Huygens passed his business on to Higgins, who renamed the watch after Lancaster (his hometown) and became known throughout Europe for the quality of his clocks.
