The present lot encompasses a set of two Speedmaster Professional models that has played an integral part in the history of space exploration. The present Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch ref. 3590.50 exemplifies the enduring allure of an icon, produced from 1988-1996 as a continuation of the revered ref. 145.022. As a late production model, signature features help date it, like the upgraded 18-jewel cal. 861 movement and tachymeter bezel with dot below 70. Furthermore, this watch comes with a long Velcro strap, intended to be strapped on the outside of a space suit. While Omega made subtle enhancements over time, its place in the Moonwatch evolution tells an important story while conveying the timeless appeal that made it an instant classic in 1957. In 1998, Omega introduced their first multifuction Speedmaster Professional X-33, also known as the “Marswatch”, engineered specifically for astronauts and qualified by NASA for space use, but equally impressive to earthbound fans of exploration. As a tool watch engineered for space, even the smallest details of the Omega X-33 were thoughtfully designed for functionality. With the ease of operating in mind, as astronauts are in thick spacesuits and gloves, the crown cleverly becomes a pusher to adjust functions. An 80dB alarm ensured perceptibility even in noisy spacecraft environments. The "dancing hands" low battery indicator elegantly signaled when power was running low. Omega channels decades of aerospace expertise into this highly sophisticated tool watch. Designed for those who still gaze longingly at the stars, the present X-33 from circa 2014 represents a pinnacle of purpose-built technology and enduring spirit of adventure. Both watches are well-preserved in unworn condition and comes with its full set of accessories, including presentation boxes made of white fabric imitating the material of space suits.
