The Omega Speedmaster is easily one of the most iconic timepieces of all time. Sent into space on the wrists of astronauts for decades and even sent to the moon during the Apollo Moon landings, it has gone down as one of the most important wristwatches ever. With this strong link to space, Omega decided, in 2013, to pay homage to the cartoon character Tintin from the “The Adventures of Tintin” comic book series. In the seventeenth volume of the series, “Explorers on the Moon,” Tintin and his friends went on a journey to the moon in a red and white chequered rocket. Inspired by this story, Omega decided to create a variant of the Speedmaster that featured this same pattern on its dial. While not an official collaboration with the character like their famed Snoopy series, the Tintin Speedmaster has become a legendary timepiece thanks to its uniquely colorful dial, which also references the Speedmaster’s original designation as a watch to be worn by car racers. THE CONSTRUCTION While its dial tells a different story, the Tintin retains the Speedmaster's classical 42mm construction with its twisted lyre lugs, pump pushers, and black bezel.
