Italian nationalists and fascists, motivated by imperialist aspirations to re-establish the "Roman Empire" in the Mediterranean Sea, brought the moniker back to life during the second world war. Panerai, the supplier for the Italian Navy at the time, applied the name to a prototype wristwatch designed for deck officers at the time. Only a small handful were produced in the period, though a hand wouldn’t have been able to hold many of these watches, with each watch measuring in at a hulking 52mm in diameter.
