He had a crucial influence on the watch world thanks to some of his famous designs, which also included the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in 1972. Genta’s design for the Nautilus was inspired by portholes on ships. The first iteration of the Nautilus was the reference 3700, which was released in 1976. At the time, it was a ground-breaking approach, especially considering the quartz crisis hitting the traditional Swiss industry. Watch brands such as Patek Philippe felt the need to offer something different. Ultimately this audacious move paid off and the Nautilus quickly became a central piece in many collections. In 2006, 30 years after the initial release of the Nautilus ‘Jumbo’, Patek introduced the reference 5711/1A which became an instant success subject to an extensive waiting list. The model was eventually discontinued in 2021 but continues to fascinate collectors more than ever.
