Introduced in 1992, the Reference 5040 enjoyed an impressive 15-year production run across three distinct series before being discontinued in 2007. As part of this esteemed lineage, the Reference 5040 stands out with an unconventional design inspired by early 20th-century aesthetics. Its elegantly sculpted tonneau case, paired with exquisite Breguet numerals, offers a distinctive alternative to the more traditional round Calatrava-style models—blending classic refinement with avant-garde appeal. While the majority of Reference 5040 models were crafted in yellow gold, fewer examples were produced in other metals, making the platinum variant especially rare. Across all three production series, approximately 600 pieces were made in platinum. The first series, produced until around 1998, features movement serial numbers in the 77X-thousand range, followed by the second series with 3.12 million, and the final series with 3.67 million. Accompanied by an Extract from the Archives confirming its manufacture year in 1994, the present lot is an early first-series piece. A rare opportunity for discerning collectors, it represents a distinctive and highly sought-after expression of Patek Philippe’s mastery in perpetual calendar wristwatches.
