This is an interesting watch as it shows details of both the third and fourth series versions of the 3940; I think that one could call it an evolution watch. The case displays the lovely side band hallmarks which we would usually associate with the third series and earlier, however the dial shows the in line ‘sigma SWISS sigma’ that is usually associated with the fourth series. A clue to this watch displaying features from both series is in the movement and case numbering. It seems to be right on the cusp of the movement numbering moving from 775450 range to this example which is in the newer 3124000 range. The earlier movement numbers are more associated with the third series. The case number is from the 2958000 range which is more third series than the later 4315000 more often seen on the fourth series. Furthermore, the dial has slight serifs on the lettering which is more usually seen on third series watches. I imagine that this watch was made around 1998, unfortunately the original Certificate of Origin is missing so I am unable to be sure until the Extract from the Archives arrives. The watch has a folding platinum buckle and its original cube winding box. Available now
