The genius of the Louis Cottier-style world time complication is that it simultaneously displays both the local time as well as the time across all of the world’s time zones on one dial. It works as follows. The dial consists of two concentric rotating rings. The outer ring—displaying the names of the cities corresponding to each timezone—runs clockwise, while the inner 24-hour ring runs counter-clockwise. The local time zone (for instance, Moscow) is placed at the 12 o’clock position by engaging the pusher located at the upper left hand side of the case. The hands can then be adjusted to the correct time using the crown. When doing so, the 24-hour ring automatically adjusts itself to this time as well. As a result, the correct local time can be read with the hands, while the correct time in each time zone is displayed simultaneously alongside the 24-hour ring. After creating a number of ,now legendary, world-time watches, Patek inexplicably retired this wonderful complication in 1965 and only revived it in 2000 with the introduction of the ref. 5110. This 5110J does a wonderful job of combining the old-school magic of Patek with a modern flair. Its 18k yellow gold Calatrava case is a respectful nod to the legendary ref. 96 HU—of which only two are known to exist—but with a more modern 37.5 mm diameter as well as sporty crown guards. The opaline dial, meanwhile, features an exquisite engraved guilloché pattern—reminiscent, among others, of the vintage ref. 2523 World-Time—but with modern applied baton markers and nifty lozenge-shaped hands. Despite its slightly larger proportions compared to its vintage counterparts, the 5110 maintains a wonderfully slim profile due to the ultra thin automatic cal. 240/188 movement with its 22k yellow gold micro-rotor (which can be viewed in all its glory through the sapphire crystal case-back). This exquisite 5110J dates back to 2002 and comes on a black alligator leather strap together with the beloved 'Calatrava-cross' folding clasp. She is also accompanied by its original box and certificate of origine.
