The request came at a time of crisis for the Swiss watch industry, when Japanese Quartz powered watches were decimating the traditional mechanical market. To tackle this, famed maisons such as Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe released the now iconic Royal Oak and Nautilus lines to draw attention back to Swiss watchmaking, and the new watch by Piaget, named Polo, was the brand’s own response. Named after “the sport of kings”, the Polo was meant to be durable enough to be worn during both sport and leisure and look suitable for both. The highly unusual ridged case and bracelet create a distinctive aesthetic that allows the Polo to stand out from its contemporaries. The same ridged design extends onto the dial itself, something none of the other integrated sports watches featured. The present watch is cased in the “Jumbo” case size, making it the most relevant for current tastes. Offered in impeccable, likely never polished condition, this watch could not be better suited for wrists of today.
