The Watch Here, we have a 1970s Piaget Protocole 'Tank' 18ct Yellow Gold 91542 with a 25mm 18ct Yellow Gold rectangular case. Its ultrathin profile is perfect in form and function. The case is machined by a process of hot rolling the Gold into its shape rather than the more typical pressing method. Chamfered corners and recessed lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 27.5mm and a case thickness of just 4.5mm ensure a very comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side is a crown with a coin edge. The smooth bezel holds a chamfered-edged flat crystal above a rich golden vertical striped dial. Two elegant dauphine hands sit centrally, creating a beautifully balanced timepiece. Piaget sits at 12 o’clock and Swiss at 6 o’clock. On the reverse, a screwed-down case back with Swiss Hallmarks, inside a manually wound Piaget Cal. 9P2, 18 jewels, 19,800 beats per hour. This incredibly thin movement at 2mm was launched in 1957 and still holds the world record for one of the thinnest mechanical movements. It comes paired with its 17mm Piaget leather strap and its original Piaget 18ct gold buckle, complete with Swiss Hallmarks.
The watch is sold with its original Piaget presentation box.
Personal Note Piaget has certainly been stealing the headlines for collectors in recent years, most notably their beautiful stone dials and rightfully so, but it has left some of their more 'simple' and elegant references, like this Protocole 'Tank' 91542, overlooked. I would not sleep on these wonderful watches as they punch well beyond their price point. Cased in 18ct Gold, powered by the beautiful manually wound and super thin Piagef 9P calibre, paired on a Piaget Strap & 18ct Gold Piaget Buckle, and just to top it off, it also comes with an original Piaget box. Snap this up today whilst you can!
The Brand Piaget was founded in 1874 in the small Swiss village of La Côte-aux-Fées. Georges-Édouard Piaget had a passion for watches from a young age. He created movements from his workshop. It wasn’t until his son Timothée Piaget took over that the business saw a huge expansion, building a new manufacturing facility. In 1943, Piaget became a registered trademark. Creating ultra-thin watches with their 9P Calibre which was an incredible 2mm thick, a world record that they still hold. Today, Piaget is a subsidiary of the Swiss Richemont group. This group includes Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, IWC Schaffhausen, Panerai, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, Dunhill, and Chloé.
