1970’s Roamer Stingray Chronograph 726 9120.602

The Romaer Stingray is not a watch you see every day but it is a watch that has a huge pedigree in the world of Rallying, with links to the racing driver Björn Waldegård. Björn Waldegård, full name Björn Waldegård Svensson, was a Swedish rally driver who is considered one of the pioneers and legends of the sport. He was born on November 12, 1943, in Sweden, and sadly, he passed away on August 29, 2014, in his hometown of Karlstad, Sweden. Waldegård made a significant impact on the world of rallying during his career, which spanned from the 1960s to the 1990s. He was known for his remarkable driving skills, consistency, and ability to adapt to various terrains and weather conditions. His smooth driving style and keen sense of pace helped him become one of the most successful and respected rally drivers of his time. A notable moment of his career came when he won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1969 in his Porsche 911. This is when the link between himself and Roamer was formed, featuring in a marketing campaign with the brand. With the watch being originally designed for pilots and sports it was a perfect match. Ideal for timing during races with its tachymeter scale and tonneau shaped modular case which as well as being water resistant is a comfy and easy watch to wear. The modular case of the watch is rather special in its own right. The original Roamer design was patented in 1941 and later improved by four patents granted in 1955 to enhance the seal. The lower unit is “ monocoque ” case housing the movement, crystal and crown, with the front unit serving as the outer case. The lower monocoque case is push fitted into the outer case shell, securing the crystal and effectively providing a compressible seal between the front and rear case units. The dual shell Roamer case harnesses external water pressure to enhance the seal’s effectiveness. But Roamer’s dual shell case employed a pendant tube penetrating both case shells and a rubber lined crown, making it more practical for everyday wear and more rugged activities. This Roamer Stingray is the last execution released in 1973/74 and is one of the last great watches the company made. Interesting Fact “In 1979, Waldegård achieved a remarkable feat by winning the World Rally Championship (WRC) title, becoming the first-ever WRC champion. Beating the well know driver Hannu Mikkola in the final round at the Rallye Côte d’Ivoire in the Ivory Coast. He accomplished this driving for the Ford factory team.” Dial Colour : Black With Silver Subs Collection : Stingray 726 Style : Male Case Material : Stainless Steel Case Diameter: (mm) : 37mm Clasp : Buckle Bracelet : Black Leather Strap Glass : Plexi Movement : Mechanical Valjoux 726 Water Resistance : N/A Special Features : Chronograph Stock Code: ROA003 The watch comes with a two year guarantee.
