A260, 18 jewels Case N° 1'000'015 Dimensions 36mm Diameter Signed Dial, Movement and Case Accessories Accompanied by Rolex fitted presentation box and additional leather strap Literature An oversized, simalar example with cloisonné enamel dial has been sold at Christie’s Geneva "Important Watches including Property from an Important European Collection" auction on May 12th 2014, as lot 207 for USD 1,250,000 When it comes to Rolex watches with cloisonné enamel dials, very few examples can compare to the present timepiece in terms of rarity and historical significance. This reference 6098, crafted in solid yellow gold, is a true masterpiece of both horological artistry and design. It is, long story short, one of the rarest and most extraordinary Rolex dials ever created. As per the archives, only two examples of the Rolex cloisonné dial were ever made in the large 36 mm case—making this watch an exceptional rarity, as enamel dials were typically produced in smaller 32 mm or 34 mm cases. The dial, featuring a majestic dragon—a symbol of strength, wisdom, and prosperity—was likely produced in fewer than eight examples, and this particular piece is probably the only oversized example to remain in such impeccable condition. The oversized enamel dial is complemented perfectly by a gold chapter ring, Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9, and the Rolex coronet at 12 o’clock—all rendered in yellow gold. The balance of these elements enhances the dial’s colors, making it one of the most visually striking and captivating dials ever made by Rolex. It represents an important and fascinating piece of Rolex’s history, crafted by the legendary Stern Frères company, whose mastery is reflected in the intricate and vibrant design. The inner case back, bearing the order number 3775 and Rolex’s specific number 103, along with the “dragon” inscription, ensures the authenticity of both the dial and the entire watch. The cloisonné enamel work, executed by Nelly Richard, is simply breathtaking. Known for her contributions to Rolex’s most beautiful and highly sought-after dials, Richard’s work on this timepiece elevates it to an entirely different level. The combination of vivid orange and deep dark tones, so meticulously blended in the enamel, creates a hypnotic effect that draws the viewer in. It is, without a doubt, one of the most visually arresting Rolex watches ever produced. Cloisonné enameling is one of the most challenging techniques in watchmaking. The artisan begins by placing thin gold wires to outline the dragon’s form, then fills each compartment with vibrant enamel before firing multiple times the dial at extremely high temperatures. This delicate process ensures the depth, translucency, and brilliance of the enamel, but also comes with considerable risk—any imperfection could cause the dial to crack or warp. As a result, cloisonné enamel dials are already rare, and Rolex examples are even more so. This particular watch, with its oversized 36 mm case, crafted by one of the most renowned enamel artists of her time, offers a unique opportunity to acquire a true milestone in watchmaking. Offered by a prominent private collector, in exceptional condition, this piece is a rare treasure, a real “Trophy Market” piece, and its exceptional beauty and rarity will undoubtedly be cherished by any collector fortunate enough to own it.
