Rolex originally designed this impressive watch for aviation pilots in the 1950s after Pan Am expressed their need for a watch that could simultaneously display multiple time zones. Rolex’s innovative solution continues to be used in modern models, such as the Rolex GMT-Master II 126710 BLNR. The key to the Rolex GMT-Master II 126710’s multiple time zone displays is the bidirectional rotatable bezel. While the local time is displayed on the classic black Rolex dial using hour markers and the second, minute, and hour hands, a fourth hand indicates the reference time using the 24-hour clock on the bezel. The hand stands out from the others, thanks to its blue color and arrow-shaped pointer. The blue and black bezel is made from the scratch-proof material Cerachrom and aluminum. The striking two-tone is not only an aesthetic feature but cleverly divides the bezel into daylight and dark hours, making it easier to read the reference time at a glance. You can set the reference and the home time independently using the Triplock winding crown. While some watches that show multiple time zones have an overwhelming amount of numbers on the dial, Rolex uses simple geometric shapes to ensure legibility and maintain their chic style. This legibility is enhanced by the use of Chromalight, a photoluminescent material that glows blue for up to eight hours in low light. On the Rolex GMT-Master II 126710, Chromalight is found on the hour markers and the four hands.
