Speake-Marin
Ripples with Metallic Green Dial
DETAILS
Speake-Marin has experienced turbulent times in the more than twenty years of its existence, which makes its history interesting for a collector: Many models were produced, many of which were quickly discontinued, and there are some real gems among them. Speake-Marin is founded in 2002 by Peter Speake, watchmaker of English origin, and his then wife Daniela Marin. The history of the brand can be traced back to the year 2000, when Peter Speake, who had been working at Renaud & Papi since 1996 on the development and construction of high-end complications, designed and manufactured the Foundation Watch pocket watch with a tourbillon and its double symmetrical drive in his spare time. The watch was to be considered a masterpiece and demonstrate the planned high positioning of the future brand. The Foundation Watch was signed Speake-Marin two years before the brand was officially established – the use of both spouses’ surnames when registering a company was entirely in keeping with the tradition of Swiss watchmaking. The Foundation Watch became the source of inspiration for the design of the brand’s wristwatch collection. This has cemented the unmistakable character of the brand’s collections over many years. When the demand for luxury watches declined after the 2007–08 financial crisis, Peter Speake was forced to seek investors for his company and gradually sold his shares. In 2012, he lost control of Speake-Marin when Christelle Rosnoblet, an entrepreneur and watch enthusiast who represented the family that was the majority shareholder of the company, became CEO. In June 2017, Peter left the company.
REASONS TO BUY
This Speake-Marin Ripples with Metallic Green Dial Limited Edition 60 is a very rare self-winding mechanical watch from the Ripples collection, which presents luxury sports watches with an integrated bracelet, is a captivating alternative to other offerings in this market segment. Launched in 2022, the Ripples collection is the brand’s most attractive new launch in recent years, offering different dial colors and a selection of in-house movements. The Ripples Metallic Green, launched in 2023 in a limited edition of only 60 pieces, is characterized by an unusual design with a small seconds hand between 1 and 2 o’clock– small seconds are extremely rare to find in luxury sports watches – and a rhodium-plated dial with a PVD coating that gives it a light green metallic tone that is unusual for this genre.

Shortly before, in 2015, Christelle Rosnoblet invested in the movement manufacturer Le Cercle des Horlogers to create a solid foundation for the development of Speake-Marin. This was particularly important for the Ripples collection of luxury sports watches, which was launched in 2022 to mark the brand’s 20th anniversary. It is built entirely on the basis of calibers that can rightly be described as in-house, developed and produced by Le Cercle des Horlogers. The Ripples collection is a clear attempt by Speake-Marin to enter the promising market of luxury sports watches with an integrated bracelet, which was experiencing an incredible boom in the early 2020s. With its octagonal case with rounded narrow sides and a dial with relief stripes and an undulating profile, the Ripples is an original, unconventional proposal in a market dominated by the Royal Oak and the Nautilus. A rare design detail that significantly shapes the character of the watch is the small seconds between 1 and 2 o’clock, which appears thanks to the in-house Speake-Marin caliber SMA03 with mini-rotor winding, which has a small seconds hand precisely at this position. Another plus point of the mini-rotor self-winding caliber is the possibility of using a fairly thin 9.2 mm case, so the dimensions, which are slightly larger than 40 mm, result in an excellent diameter-to-thickness ratio for a collector’s watch that is intended to be worn every day. This Ripples Metallic Green with a rhodium-plated dial, which is given a light green metallic tone by a PVD coating, was launched in 2023 in a limited edition of only 60 pieces.
