Description

Tiffany & Co. Atlas Sterling Silver Automatic Chronometer M06940

While Tiffany & Co. might be best known for their stunning jewellery, co-signed dials and historic prowess as a powerhouse of design, Tiffany & Co. also have a rich history in watchmaking too with several important patents to their name that go back over 100 years such as the patent for the first luminous-painted numerals on a watch dial in 1903 amongst other things, like Charles Tiffany opening one of the largest watchmaking facilities in Geneva in 1874. In 1983, the Atlas collection was introduced as a tribute to Tiffany’s great public clock above their Fifth Avenue flagship store which depicts Atlas, the Greek Titan condemned to hold up the heavens for eternity, but with the clock on his shoulders. Featuring a 36mm sterling silver case with a pronounced bezel design that features Roman numerals throughout and rather unusual lugs that hug the outside of the strap they hold, the Atlas is quite an unusual watch stylistically. Elegant in its execution, its sterling silver case promises Tiffany’s famous level of luxury, but in a practical and unique timepiece that differs from the designs of more traditional watchmakers. THE DIAL Boasting a plain silver dial with just a date aperture and small minute track, the Atlas' display is dominated by the large Roman numerals standing proud along its silver bezel. THE CONSTRUCTION Designed like a dress watch, the Atlas introduces Tiffany's subtle design talents through unique tells, such as its unusual lug design and engraved bezel.
