The Watch Here we have an early and rare 1953 Tissot Navigator Worldtimer Bumper Automatic 4002-1 with a round 36mm stainless steel case that comfortably sits on your wrist thanks to the thick curved lugs. Its slim profile leads to a lug-to-lug length of 43mm and a case thickness of 11mm. We have a pusher and a domed coin edge push/pull crown down the right side. To set the watch, you pull the crown out one position; as you rotate the crown in either direction, the hands move as well as the inner world cities; once you have selected your city, you then push in the pusher to set the hands independently to the correct time. A fixed bezel has an engraved 12-hour scale you can use to tell the time in a second-time zone conveniently. The domed crystal sits above this dynamic two-tone Worldtimer dial. An outer fixed ring has a 24-hour scale surrounding an inner rotating world city time zone disc, elegant Dauphine hands are complemented by a tapered second hand, and on the bottom edge, we have the Tissot motif completing this striking vintage traveller companion. On the reverse, a screw-down solid engine turned case back, inside a bumper automatic Tissot Cal. 28.5 N-21t, 17 jewels high-grade movement. It comes paired with a well-suited 18mm leather strap and pin buckle.
Personal Note It's far from every day an original Tissot Navigator Worldtimer comes your way, especially a super early reference 4002-1, and even more so when it's in an incredible example like this one. At 36mm this watch wears large, especially for its size, and could easily be mistaken for a perfect re-edition, if such a thing existed. Powered by a bumper automatic Tissot calibre 28.5 N-21t, very similar to a bumper automatic from Omega, this is a true collector's dream and not one to sleep on. Add it to your collection whilst you can, who knows how many of these are actually left in condition like this, but I can guarantee it's not a lot!
The Brand The Swiss luxury watch company Tissot from Le Locle, Switzerland, was established in 1853 by Charles Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile. Under Charles-Emile’s direction, they manufactured pocket watches with parts from Russia and the United States. In 1915, the company began producing wristwatches. Between 1920 and 1977, Tissot produced its own movements. In 1930, to survive the 1929 crash and economic crisis, they entered into an agreement with Omega to form the SSIH Group which 53 years later became the Swatch Group.
