--> Description Planetarium Copernicus ref 821-22 in yellow gold with astronomical dial, circa 1998 Ulysse Nardin Brand: Ulysse Nardin Model: Planetarium Copernicus Year: circa 1998 Reference: 821-22 Dial: Midnight blue Case N°: 013 Movement: Automatic Cal: 83.6.013 Material: 18k yellow gold Strap: Leather with original gold buckle Size: 40 mm Accessories: Original box --> More information The Planetarium Copernicus, Reference 801-22, is an extraordinary timepiece that pays tribute to the work of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. In addition to its function of measuring time, the dial is segmented into several concentric rotating dials, representing both Ptolemy's terrestrial-centric universe and Copernicus' heliocentric universe. Although Copernicus' model was more accurate, both interpretations influenced the scale of the universe. The watch shows the positions of the seven ancient planets: Earth, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. The Sun is positioned in the centre of the dial, with the planets arranged around it on the concentric disc, each labelled accordingly. This design makes it possible to observe the movement of the planets in Copernicus' universe and to make calculations based on Ptolemy's model. The Earth's position indicates the month and zodiac period, while its axis of rotation shows the moon's orbit. Despite its many functions, the watch remains very legible. This model is part of Ulysse Nardin's series of celestial-themed watches, reflecting the brand's mastery of combining watchmaking with astronomical inspiration.
