The extreme magnetic environment near the poles affected flight instruments and pilots' wristwatches. To solve this, SAS asked its supplier, Universal Genève, to develop an antimagnetic watch. The project was given to a young employee, Gerald Genta, who later became a pretty much renowned watch designer. The result of this collaboration was the original Polarouter, released in 1954 and later renamed the Polerouter. Manufactured in many different variations, shapes and references, the present example, a Reference 10234-11 from the 1950s, is a remarkable representation of the Polerouter “Deluxe” series. It features a distinctive 36 mm yellow-gold case with heavy, extended, and contoured lugs that give the watch a bold and elegant presence. The screw-back case, with its visible serial numbers, indicates careful preservation and authenticity. This Polerouter is powered by the caliber 138SS movement, an automatic mechanism notable for its particular rotor design that allows for circa 315 degrees of rotation, as opposed to the standard 360 degrees. The dial of this watch is a standout feature, with a captivating champagne color and a braided texture that literally catches the eye. The outer part of the dial has a smooth surface with subtly engraved linen effect for the indexes.
