The world of independent watchmaking is a colorful place with hundreds of brands all vying to create some of the most unique and wonderful watches the industry has seen. Natuarally, some brands have proven to be more successful than others, one such brand being Urwerk. Founded in 1997 by Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner, Urwerk’s mission has always been to create Haute Horlogerie timepieces that fuse their love of traditional watchmaking with a futuristic aesthetic that seems to have been lifted straight out of a sci-fi novel. With their distinctive case shapes and signature satellite hour markers, their timepieces have become some of horology’s most sought-after watches, one such being the model we have here, the UR-100V Blue Planet. Launched in 2021, the UR-100V expands upon Urwerk's core collection, the UR-100, in a wonderfully exciting way. Inspired by Urwerk's roots, the UR-100V C52 tells the time as Urwerk envisaged it all those years ago, while also featuring a whole host of astronomical complications that build upon its solar and celestial-inspired design origins and push Urwerk's watchmaking credentials even further into the ether of Haute Horlogerie. Continuing with Urwerk's original design philosophy and fascination with space, the UR-100V C52, launched in 2022, features a number of complications that pay homage to the brand’s astrological inspirations, such as the brand’s signature satellite hour markers and two celestial complications that show the distance Earth has travelled around the Sun in the space of 20 minutes, and another that shows how far the Earth has spun on its own axis in the same 20 minute interval. Made of 52 ultra-thin layers of ‘Carbon Thin Ply’ that are compressed in epoxy resin, the UR-100V C52’s blacked out case exhibits carbon fiber’s signature marbling along with a matte finish that contrasts the model’s otherworldly design by dressing it down a bit. Excentric and intensely unique, the UR100V C52 is a limited editon collection of just 30 pieces that has come to signify the brand’s desire to continually improve its offerings and the quality of its watches. THE CONSTRUCTION Made of 52 ultra-thin layers of 'carbon thin ply' that are compressed in epoxy polymer resin, the UR-100V C52's blacked-out case includes a marbling specific to carbon fiber along with a matte finish that allows this watch to wear more subtly on the wrist than one might assume at first glance.
