This Zenith S.58 Mk. IV is a collectable sports watch first introduced in 1958, a period when tool watches were becoming indispensable for professional and recreational divers and marked the brand’s entry into the burgeoning market for professional-grade timepieces
The S.58’s development was influenced by the increasing popularity of recreational diving in the 1950s and the corresponding demand for reliable underwater timepieces. The S.58, is possibly named after the word “Scaphandre”, the French name for the period`s professional diving dry-suits, but it is also debated this name comes from ints intended use for “Sport” activities, while the “58” indicates its debut year, 1958.
This model became a symbol of the brand’s innovative approach to creating functional sports watches and the S.58 underwent several iterations during its production run, which lasted until approximately 1968.
This specific model, equipped with the Caliber 2542PC automatic movement, a date function, and a rotating bezel, aligns with the fourth and last generation of the S.58 series, manufactured in the period 1964-68.

This Zenith S.58 has a stainless steel case measuring 38mm in diameter, excluding the original crown. The case construction emphasizes durability, with a screw-down caseback designed to enhance water resistance. The plexiglass crystal remains in an excellent condition. The clean, utilitarian design of the case exemplifies the practical approach Zenith employed in crafting this model for demanding environments.
This watch is also complete with its orignal two-directional turning bezel, made of an outer steel ring with a bakelite insert, this is in a good – lightly used and unpolished – condition, it has a small restoration in the position near 3 o `clock
At its core, the watch houses the Zenith Caliber 2542PC, a reliable manufacture-grade automatic movement. The Cal. 2542PC reflects the technical advancements of its era as it was one of the first new generation of automatic calibers with central winding rotor.

The black dial is well-preserved, showcasing its vintage charm. The surface shows a characteristic spiderweb pattern and it is possible that this dial has undergone a partial restoration, as the words Zenith, Automatic and S.58 seem to have been retouched
The dial has its characteristic large, luminous hour markers ensuring legibility in low-light conditions, a critical feature for a diver’s watch. The dial a shows light patina, typical for a watch of this age, the overall condition is very good and adds character to the piece.
