Released in 1917, the Cartier Tank was designed by Louis Cartier after he was inspired by the shape of the Renault tanks he saw on the Western Front during WWI. Perhaps one of the most recognizable pieces of horological design to ever be created, the Tank’s rectangular shape, svelte proportions, and timeless aesthetic have enabled it to earn a top spot within the horological hall of fame. Amongst the plethora of models that belong to this iconic collection is perhaps the purest distillation of its design, the Tank Louis Cartier. True to the original, the Tank Louis Cartier features the same rounded case sides called “brancards” that stretch to form its lugs as the watch Louis Cartier designed all those years ago, which spawned the now-legendary collection and all of its associated models such as the Tank Francaise, Tank Cintree and so on. Offered here we have a contemporary version of the Tank Louis Cartier, the ref. WGTA0121, launched in 2023 as a limited edition of 170 pieces that follows on from 2022's ref. WGTA0093. Boasting a stunning gray-blue dial with a variety of dark blue hues arranged in rows that combine to form rectangles around the dial, large quarter Roman numeral hour markers, and steel hands, this timepiece is a modern interpretation of Louis Cartier’s classic that is intensely stylish and just as luxurious as the Tank Louis Cartier has always been known to be. THE DIAL Moving away from Cartier's signature dial design details, the WGTA0121 features a stunning blueish gray dial with dark Roman numerals only populating the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions, with steel hands to match its platinum construction, instead of Cartier's often-used blued steel hands. THE CONSTRUCTION Another element of the Tank Louis Cartier's iconic design is its svelte case dimensions. This means it is an excellent unisex option for men looking for a classical timepiece, and women looking for something that will fill their wrists perfectly, a balance that the WGTA0121 strikes.
