Description
7206 Monaco 73633 c. 1975 Out of all the rectangular watches out there, the Heuer Monaco stands out for being the only one originally designed as a chronograph. Not only that, it was created specifically to house one of the first automatic chronograph movements ever made. Until 1969, an automatic chronograph was considered extremely difficult to achieve. The Caliber 11 that sat inside the watch was in fact a chronograph module developed by Dubois Depraz that sat on top of a Buren microrotor movement, highlighting the collaborative nature of the industry at the time.\n\nIn addition to the new movement, the Monaco featured a waterproof case. This was especially impressive given that the waterproofing gaskets had to be square in order to fit the case, and these were more difficult to produce.\n\nThe Monaco is more than just its movement, though. The bold square case and colourful dials really made it stand out amongst other chronographs at the time, which were round and fairly conventional in design. The racing-inspired design choices paid off when Steve McQueen chose to wear it in the movie “Le Mans”, propelling it to legendary status.\n\nWhile the unusual design meant the Monaco was never a mainstream commercial success, it has since then been revived by Heuer's successor, TAG Heuer.
