1960’s Heuer Monte Carlo 542.701

From motor racing, flying and even power boats the Monte Carlo did it all when it came to timing. Heuer has been well known in motor racing for what seems an eternity. But this is where it all really started with dashboard timers. Whether you needed to time a lap or a flight it was easy, press the start button and the stopwatch did the rest. Widely known for having the greatest legibility ever found in a stopwatch by its users. Mainly due to the luminous numbers popping off the dark black background. Along with the easy to read hour timer and large arrow hand for the minutes. The 1960’s version made away with the third button making it a two button stopwatch. Meaning it could be started stopped and re set off just the two, much easier for the user. In immaculate condition, this timer is waiting on its next dashboard! Making this watch extra special is the fact it was used by the iconic rally driver Jim Porter. Jim Porter, the long-time co-driver of the four-time British champion and driver Roger Clark. They had a successful partnership in rallying, starting with local road rallies in Renaults and Minis while studying for an agricultural career. Their rally career gained momentum when they began co-driving in Escort rally cars, achieving major victories in Europe on events like the Tulip Rally and the Acropolis Rally. Jim Porter also co-drove for other notable drivers like Jean-Francois Piot and Hannu Mikkola during his time with Ford. After Ford’s rally activities diminished, he and Clark had a season with British Leyland. Jim Porter’s active rallying career concluded in 1981, but he continued to contribute to the sport by pursuing organizational opportunities, especially at the RAC Rally in Britain. Interestingly, he was involved with the organizers when Roger Clark won the RAC Rally twice. Throughout the 60s and 70s, the partnership of Clark and Porter became legendary in the rallying world, leaving a lasting mark on the sport’s history.
